Baltimore Renters United plans our campaigns around the issues tenants face daily. Our campaign goals are based on our commitment to amplifying tenants’ voices and using our platform to demand action from city and state governments.
Our Campaigns
-
Tenant Organizing
Our main ongoing campaign is focused on building a strong movement for tenants rights in Baltimore. In this campaign, we focus heavily on teaching tenants their rights and building coalition among tenants throughout the city. BRU Rent Court Watch
BRU sends volunteers and tenant advocates into the courts to see how tenants fare when attempting to access their rights and advocate for justice. Our goals are to ensure fairness and raise awareness around barriers tenants face every day in the courts.
-
Rent Stabilization
BRU tenants asked, and we heard you! Renters in Baltimore City are tired of skyrocketing rents, so BRU is bringing political education around rent stabilization to our tenants. We are learning about the past so we can look towards a future of stable, affordable housing!
-
Right to Counsel
During the COVID-19 pandemic, BRU worked with Baltimore City tenants to pass legislation guaranteeing legal representation to tenants facing eviction. Now, we look onward to ensure RTC is properly funded and effectively implemented.
-
2023 Statewide Legislative Priorities
Done in partnership with Renters United Maryland. This campaign is focused on creating and passing several pieces of legislation designed to decrease evictions, help tenants advocate for their rights, and prevent slumlords from abusing the courts unchecked.
